At this age, children need a fully curated experience. YouTube Kids with Approved Content Only gives you a small, parent-selected video library with no search, no Shorts, and no comments. The interface is designed for non-readers.
If YouTube Kids' catalog is too limited, WhitelistVideo's Curated Feed mode provides the same approve-only approach but draws from the full YouTube catalog — giving you more educational channels to choose from.
Ages 6–9: Primary school
Recommended: WhitelistVideo (Curated Feed or Full YouTube mode)
Children this age often outgrow YouTube Kids but aren't ready for unrestricted YouTube. WhitelistVideo lets you approve specific channels on the real YouTube app — they get familiar creators like Mark Rober or Crash Course Kids without the algorithm recommending rabbit holes.
Block Shorts and Hide Comments should be enabled at this age. Consider AI Auto-pilot (Premium) to screen individual videos on approved channels.
Ages 10–12: Tweens
Recommended: WhitelistVideo (Full YouTube mode) or Supervised YouTube account with 0-minute Shorts limit
Tweens want more independence. WhitelistVideo's Full YouTube mode lets them browse with your safety net — approved channels only, Shorts blocked, comments hidden. Alternatively, a Google supervised account with the Shorts limit set to zero gives them broader access with some guardrails.
This is also when Bark becomes relevant for monitoring social media alongside YouTube controls.
Ages 13+: Teens
Recommended: Supervised YouTube account + WhitelistVideo for Shorts/comments control, or Bark for monitoring
Teens generally need broader access but may still benefit from Shorts blocking and comment hiding. A supervised account with a Shorts limit works well. WhitelistVideo can be used in a lighter mode — approved channels plus AI Auto-pilot rather than strict whitelist-only.
For teens, monitoring (Bark) often replaces restriction. The right approach depends on your family's philosophy.
